Phyllis Wheatley and Amanda Gorman

Phillis Wheatley 1753 – December 5, 1784

Famous for her “Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral,” Wheatley was emancipated shortly after the publication of her book but died in poverty and obscurity at the age of 31.

Youngest inaugural poet, at age twenty-two, to deliver a reading of “The Hill We Climb” a Joe Biden’s presidential inauguration.  Her work focuses on issues of oppression, feminism, and race.
