The Grimke Sisters Sarah Moore Grimke 1792 – 1893, Angela Emily Grimke 1805 - 1879    First known white women advocates of abolition of slavery and women’s rights.  They grew up in a slave-owning family in South Carolina, and in their twenties, became part of Philadelphia’s Quaker society.  They were deeply involved speakers, writers, and educators and founded a private school.

"I know nothing of man's rights, nor women's rights; human rights are all that I recognize."
